Sunday in the Park, 2010

The drama started to ease as the weekend approached. We all had our doubts with the on again off again state of weather forecasting, but thankfully Hurricane Earl had a better idea, "Stay east and leave those car collectors and racers alone." Earl’s notion prevailed and, despite a few clouds on Friday and one brief sprinkle, he saved his energy for Cape Cod where they know just how to deal with this sort of maelstrom.

Sunday dawned bright, sunny, & temperate; a perfect day for a Sunday in the Park. The park; none other than the Northeast’s historic center of road racing, Lime Rock Park in Salisbury, Connecticut. A superb venue for this exhibit of the fine collector cars exhibited on track. As the one national Concour exhibit where road truly meets track this event invites & attracts performance and competition inspired machinery from virtually all eras of the last century.

We are pleased to have taken an active role in both the vintage racing and Concours exhibit portion of this terrific weekend. While our sister organization, Vintage Racing Services Inc., tended to a number of on-track vintage racers, the Automotive Restorations staff was busy assisting with the event’s administration, in addition to customer support for exhibit cars. We all owe Chairman Murray Smith a huge thanks, as the field of both racers and Concours exhibitors attest. Since taking over as the weekend’s key man, Murray has rebuilt this traditional season highlight to and beyond its former glory. Crowds have returned, as have racers, and the by-invitation Concours, once just a Sunday show, is now something very special. We are indeed pleased to be a part of it all. Thanks Murray!

Despite some early morning congestion created by the size of the response and a few organizational issues, which will be gone come 2011, all was in place and ready for judging as the sun shone on this superb field. The show uses the entire 1.5-mile race circuit; Concours along the main straightaway, with club exhibits around the entire remainder of the track. Fred Jackson had done a wonderful as club Liaison and the exhibits each club put forth were impressive. Judges had two assignment, Concours exhibit classes and clubs, so it was a busy day. Our judges worked hard and knew their stuff; a big thank you to all. All was in place and tabulated for the drive-up presentation of 1st place and special awards mid-afternoon. The pictures above tell far more of the tale than words. We were pleased to see quite a few cars we’ve had a hand in awarded and we congratulate all our customers and friends. We are most appreciative to all who exhibited and worked so hard to make this a Sunday in the Park to remember…see ya in 2011.
