La Carrera and VRS (1992-2003)
1992 OUR 1ST YEAR! And by far our most difficult!! We sent our semi to Tuxtla! Drive Joe Hatch may have had the most difficult drive of us all. He made it and off went this ARI-VRS prepared Aston Martin DB2 for team Lenz-Bruce-Gunther and Bain.
1992’s Car 2: The VRS prepared Swallow Doretti for team Shanahan-Vettoretti. Here near mid-point with a bit of rear end damage. These guys finished as well with a lot learned and plenty of exposure for sponsor REPLAY.
1993 and with lessons learned: Bill’s says we’re going to start with the strongest, light, safe sedan we can and prepare it with a solid finish in mind. It worked, we finished well and the results speak well for all involved. Commerative VRS trophy right and above the team: From right: VRS key man and car builder Brian Rechtiene, Co-piloto Danny Vettoretti, piloto Bill Shanahan, guide Julio Tovar and multi time SCCA national champion and race tech Kent Prather. Sponsors: Dina, Pepsi & MTV had billboard.
1994 – 1997 with a return in 1999: Bill, Danny & their Pepsi-Dina-MTV-Corona fueled Volvo 444 continues its winning ways with stage and class wins & solid overall results year to year. Below testing @ Watkins Glen, NY.
1998 finds rules changes and the need for more speed. Bill engages the ARI-VRS crew to put a 1963 Split Window Corvette into Carrera ready shape. One other twist, Danny’s busy so I am the co driver! This car does not miss a beat!!! We finish, we finish well on many stages but one minor off road keeps us from a podium.
THE NEW VOLVO SAGA: Winter 2001 and the next Carrera assault Volvo, a 1967 P1800 (above) is under construction at Vintage Racing Services Inc shops. Below done with testing the next step.
La Carrera 2002 finds us back with Volvo sponsorship, Piloto Bill Shanhan and a new Co-Piloto filling in for Danny Vettoretti. 2002 saw some stage wins and no mishaps for team Shanahan-Gunther.
The faster Volvo had a very good 1st La Carrera with stage wins and solid OA and class results. A major race prep & ready….So, its 2003 and we’re soon off again here we ready the P1800 with spare engine for load-up for that long run from Stratford, CT to Tuxtla Guteirrez, Mexico!!
