First selling in the 1960's, the US Emission Control laws were hard for Alfa Romeo and in 1968 to 1970 they completely disappeared from the US market. The Duetto model was introduced in 1966 and Alfa sold the same basic car until 1994 in the USA, although the engine went from 1.6 to 2.0 liters. It was however the same basic Alfa twin cam four and suspension. The 1994 cars were instantly recognizable as the 1966 Duetto. This model broke the 16 year old longevity record of the MGB.
The original owner took delivery in Dallas. The car was then sold to the second owner in Sachse, Texas, whose estate was transferred to a dealer in Texas. At this stage the car did not run and needed attention. After not being after not being sold the car ended up being auctioned on E-Bay in 2007. It was clear that while the chassis was solid there was other body damage and the convertible top needed replacement. The new owner decided it was time for a full scale restoration to bring the car back close to its original condition.
This restoration was completed over 3 years, starting with a vehicle strip and a full body media blast by America Dry Stripping in Milford, CT. This was followed by powder coating and then epoxy priming by Automotive Restorations in Stratford, CT, who also completed nose and trunk lid panel repair. The car was then moved for finish painting. At this time the floor panels were replaced, trunk and under hood areas were painted and the outer body repainted in an original white with a modern base/clear coat paint system. The engine, gearbox and rear axle were dis-assembled and rebuilt. The suspension was refreshed with new springs, bushings and bearings as required. The convertible top was reconstructed with all new materials, including a new frame and all new seals. Soft top and rear window were renewed. The seats were professionally rebuilt using original red vinyl. No stone was left unturned during this whole process. In 2016 the car was shown at the Northeast Alfa Romeo Owners Club convention and received the Certificate d' Oro for "best open car" with a score of 99. The car has been driven only 7000 miles since restoration and comes complete with spare, jack, fire extinguisher, soft top boot cover and original Owner's manual, plus whole car vehicle cover.
Here is a great opportunity to own a fully turn key operating Duetto which should give many miles of sports car driving to the new owner without need for further work.
