FOUND AND WELL-BOUGHT: Jim had been looking for a 356 roadster for awhile when he found this tidy Drauz-bodied 1962 Super 90 Cabriolet
This car had been restored in Italy some time ago and clearly had a few minor issues to attend. Floor pans were fine and mechanicals only wanting service, but prior repair work to sills, jambs and dash needed correction. The bottom line worked out fine after all was corrected so well-bought is indeed the final chapter for Jim’s neat and rare 356 Drauz cabriolet.
A FINE & FRIENDLY TRANSFER: We had known and serviced this 1962 Porsche 356B for Charlie for years. He’d seen to all needed and enjoyed years of reliable classic motoring. It was getting a little worn in the fit and finish department but all else was up to speed. Our pal Richard was looking for a Porsche 356 in soft top format. This one offered the right bones, the opportunity to enhance a sound car, returning it to correct original livery yielding a really fine example at a sensible number. Bought, restored as seen here, and a good deal for all involved including we craftspeople who do enjoy making it happen at ARI.
A 1964 356SC Cabriolet goes from Black to White. The code called for white, the car was black, the finish had problems and the interior was once red and so…the die was cast. All apart, down to bare metal, freshen the drivetrain, re-trim, address seals + chrome, add a new top. All to put this last of the 356 line into the condition it deserves.
RESULT: One really great looking, driving and correct 356SC. First exhibit outing: a 1st in class at Sunday in the Park event, September 2016. Andy’s Porsche 356 is just as he wants it and gets used regularly.
ONTO THE NEXT GENERATION. Mayo’s RS recreation had already had a tidy set of mechanical upgrades to make it just a bit more than Porsche built into these great machines in period. Oil cooler air flow got a major rework as did wheels and tires. To finish this job he asked if this Clone could get aesthetically tuned to align the show with the got. A quality refinish with pearl accent and some subtle color gets it done in proper Porsche form.
RS CLONE ++ Gets the finishing touches: Tidy everywhere you look and plenty of grunt and grip. Mayo’s design for the finished car found lots of compliments we think…well.deserved!
