2014 Summit Point

The VRS crew Consisted of Larry, Harvey, Briann and yours truly (Kent Bain) for the Running of the Jefferson. “The guys” had been hard at it for some time when I rolled into Summit Point Raceway Thursday afternoon. VRG schedules allow lots of track time and full practice days as a part of the event so Thursday was a busy and entertaining one for all involved.

Under the VRS tent we find three 914 Porsches including Jim Lenehan’s car above, David Gussack’s 914-6 & Ed Mettleman’s 914 2.0. Sandwiched between we find Alex Heckerts 66 Corvette, Kent’s Triumph Spitfire 1300 and Brian Rechtiene’s very quick GRD F-2 machine. Nice to be under a roof for the rain we knew ws coming. VRG planned it well as record rains fell overnight on Thursday, but record rains are never good and cleanup meant that racing did not resume until mid-day Friday.

Rain at Summit always means slippery conditons for a few laps as the red clay soil wash is lubricious…too say the least. A few cautious laps for all started things moving again before mid-day. The whole weekend went very nicely thereafter. When the chekerd flags fell we found:

VRS key man Brian Rechtiene 1st in class and 1st overall in Suday’s Phil Hill Cup race. Brian turned 116 second laps in his GRD/Lotus Formula B machine. NICE RACIN’ BRIAN!!

There was yet another highlight to VRG’s terrific vintage racing weekend at Summit: TESTING. This group always includes much appreciated generous test allowances. Though racer Jim Lenehan had a business commitment precluding his racing, the car was there and we managed to get his new 914-6 Porsche tested. It required a bit of sorting in order to be sure he was 100% ready to go the next time out. Our collective thanks to the VRG (Vintage Racer Group), Barbara Scott and all at Summit Point Raceway who do such a good job of making every Jefferson 500 a great and very racer friendly weekend! WELL DONE ALL!
