Lime Rock Fall


If it’s Labor Day weekend, it must be the Lime Rock Historic Festival, revived a few years ago by Murray Smith to its former glory. This is a must be there event for vintage racers and fans from all over the Northeast and beyond. Murray puts together an event of the highest quality and organization. Here one can see famous race cars rarely seen in public and this year was no exception. Sir Stirling Moss was on hand for the weekend, gladly signing autographs and chatting in the paddock. To compliment Sir Stirling’s presence, the Collier Collection brought five of the significant cars he raced during his career.

VRS was of course on hand with Dave Gussack and his Spitfire and Porsche 914/6, Roger Werner with his freshly repowered 911, Ed Mettelman and his Porsche 914, Brian Rechtiene and the GRD, Kent with his Spitfire and me with the Ginetta G16.


Once again, Dave stole the show, putting on a first place performance on Saturday beating Kent fair and square (even though Kent took a few liberties at the start). Then again on Sunday, Dave had a terrific race with Bill Warner in his Group 44 Triumph TR6, finally finishing second to the TR6’s superior power.

As there is no racing at Lime Rock on Sunday, the track becomes one huge car show and concours. Our own Kent Bain is the organizer of what is called Sunday in the Park and it gets bigger and better every year. This year’s event drew nearly 1000 cars beautifully displayed around Lime rock’s 1.5 miles.

Unlike 2011 when the monsoons largely washed out Monday racing turning the paddock and the left hander into one enormous lake, this year the sun was out and the racing was fast and close. As mentioned above, Dave put on a great show to finish second in Group 8. All in all, another great Historic Festival. Congratulations to Murray and all involved in putting on the show. As for me, I’d rather be flying!
