A few days after returning from Lime Rock it’s off to the Finger Lakes Region of New York to Watkins Glen for the SVRA US Vintage Grand Prix. This is SVRAs premier event and this year the turnout was back up to old standards with over 300 race cars registered for what has now become a five day event. Jim Lenehan was there with his mighty Datsun 240Z and Swift DB2. Our good friend Bill Branson came with Bob, Rocco and his two Formula Fords and very pretty Porsche 911. Kent had his formidable Porsche 914/6 and we also brought our VRS 914/6 rental car that Brian and I were going to drive.
Weather is always problematic at The Glen and we were not disappointed when, on Saturday, a thousand mile cold front pushed black clouds, high winds, thunder and lightning, and driving rain over our little hilltop. By the start of the enduro at four PM, the track had dried enough and out went Jim in the Datsun to finish seventh, fastest of all the 240Zs as he had been all weekend. Brian and I pushed our good handling but short on power 914/6 from a 29th place grid position to finish twelfth.
Next up, VIR with a full truckload of cars. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
