Brian Redman’s Targa 66
If ever there was a time that escape from the wicked winter of New England was anticipated, it was this year. Race season couldn’t start soon enough! So it was with delight that we boarded Jet Blue for the trip to warm and sunny Florida and Brian Redman’s Targa 66.
Alex Heckert was along with his beautiful ’66 Corvette, now sporting very graceful fender flares to enclose more rubber and side exhausts to help the 327 small block breath. Over the winter, a host of suspension changes were made as well. Also attending was John Deford and his immaculate 2 liter Porsche 914/6. John has fitted the 914 with a complete set of data acquisition sensors, the better to analyze his driving and make some improvements.
As always, Brian’s event was relaxed and fun. There is loads of track time which is perfect for sorting out the cars and getting the rust out of the drivers. Alex went well and the crew (Brian, Harvey and Larry) was able to sort out some minor issues and have the Corvette ready for Sebring the following weekend. John spent the weekend working with driving coach Peter Krause and interpreting all the data flowing from the now wired Porsche. John’s lovely wife, Trish, put in an appearance as did his son, Sam.
Many thanks to Brian, Marion and James for another well done event and the welcome opportunity to escape the frozen north.
After a few restful days enjoying the sun, we were off to Sebring for SVRA’s season opener. Alex Heckert and John Deford continued their Florida vacation in Sebring and were joined by Jim Lenehan with his Datsun 240Z and Swift DB2, and Dave Gussack with his Porsche 914/6.
Fine weather continued at Sebring and SVRA provided an entry of around 150 vintage race cars as well as sharing the track with the SCCA Trans Am guys. It was a busy schedule but went off relatively well. John Deford was joined by his friend and pro racer, Mark Bunting to share the driving in the enduro (and setting the pace). VRS drivers John and Dave did well with podium finishes in the endure (John and Mark 4th overall) and in the Group 8 sprint races (John 3rd and Dave 4th in sprint race No 1 and Dave 3rd in sprint race No 2).
The weekend wrapped up early on Sunday and we were loaded and ready to roll by lunchtime. Now, back to the frozen north…BRRRR.
