Vintage Lightning comes to Thunderbolt

The event title says it all…well sort of, lots of good racing paired with exceptional track time was indeed mixed with lightning…. and rain and rain and more rain. Thursday practice was dry and the SVRA’s well administered schedule meant that you could test and tune to your hearts delight. Friday sprinkles started very softly as the 9 o’clock hour opened, allowing only a few slightly greasy laps for drivers such as I who’d used Thursday as our transit to event day. The downpour soon came and down it did come until well into the evening. A few brave souls could be found on track…sliding and soaked about covers the balance of track work for Friday.

Saturday started with a few heavy clouds, but turned into a really nice and not too hot festival of speed. Qualifying, sprint races in the afternoon FOR ALL capped by a 1.5 hour enduro. Whew!!! Raced out and tired but happy was the sentiment we found at days end. The new SVRA format with sprint races on both Saturday and Sunday along with an enduro or two accommodating all entrants is well conceived and, as always, well administered. It allows those who can only make a 2 day weekend of it a complete race experience whatever way the weekend is structured. Sunday was another good one. All the VRS racers had a great time at NJMS. Tony Parella’s team did a great job of rethinking schedules and track use opportunities to make the most for all participants of an event that had fewer entrants than it deserved.

VRS drivers and crew found the podium time and again. Better yet, the weekend was not marred by on track mishaps or delays save an oil drop incident or two. Of note, the NJMS crew is a confidence builder for drivers. The attention and equipment and speed applied to track oil remediation is first rate and much appreciated.

Under the VRS tent, winning races and having a great time at New Jersey Motorsports July 11th – 14th 2013 we find:

Jim Lenehan, Swift S2000 and Datsun 240Z: Jim found himself on the Podium on more than one occasion with that trusty Datsun and running will in the S2000 group to a 4th place finish.

Alex and the mighty big block Corvette had a great run. Some sorting Thursday then onto class wins.

VRS veteran racer Richard knows makes the most of it….race, relax, win a race, and get recharged for the week.

VRS staff enthused, on track and finding a podium from time to time…while keeping the racers running “just so”!

Thank You to Jon McKnight and his able team for another great SVRA weekend.
